Fill out this form to apply first, before you register for this seminar. When you register, choose the Pre-approved Payment Plan instead of PayPal. In the comments section of your registration, let us know in which of these states you reside: AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX.

Together, these 2 emails confirm your registration has been completed. Additional emails are sent to all registered participants about 4 or 5 days before the seminar. That email includes the necessary Zoom link. If you do not see these emails in your inbox, it is suggested that you check spam and other folders. Emails are sent to the email address you used during registration.

*Pre-approved payment options (invoicing or payment plans) can be arranged by visiting the Help Desk and submitting a ticket requesting approval prior to registration.

If you're an interpreter from one of the listed states by the Southeastern Interpreter Guidance Network (SIGN) and you've submitted an application for financial assistance to them, register with the Pre-approved Payment Plan option instead of PayPal.

The (Incredible) Interpreter Brain

The interpreting task is not located in the ears, or in the eyes, or on the hands. The seat of interpreting is in the brain, and in the many functions that the brain performs. In this seminar we will examine how the brain assists - and may impede - successful interpreting.

Registration

Registration is $75. Early-bird rate $65 when registering by December 22, 2023, at 5:00PM Eastern. When completing the registration form, those who identify as BIPOC or student qualify for a $10 scholarship to be applied during registration (reduces your total by another $10).

ADA accommodation requests must be sent to the coordinator by Friday, December 22, 2023.

Cancellation Policy, Vouchers and Refunds

If you need to cancel, you may receive a voucher to be used for any future BMC seminar, worth 100% of your payment. If you request a refund, you will be issued a refund for the amount paid minus the PayPal fee for processing the refund. Either way, requests must be received in writing (email, Help Desk) by 5:00PM Eastern on Friday, December 22, 2023. Requests for refunds or vouchers made after that date and time are non-refundable. If you do not attend the seminar, there will be no refund or voucher issued.

These online IMI Seminars are offered live only. There will be no recording, and no opportunity to watch them at a later date.

CEUs (through MassRID)

RID CMP Continuing Education Units

This seminar is offered at 0.3 PS CEUs/ACETs at all levels (Little/No, Some, Advanced, Teaching) Content Level.

MassRID’s policy is that participants must attend at least 75% of sponsored event in order to earn CEUs.

Betty M. Colonomos Bio

Betty M. Colonomos, currently serving as Director of the Bilingual Mediation Center, is a fluent ASL/English bilingual. Her academic background is in Deaf Education/Speech Pathology (B.S.), Counseling (M.A.), Linguistics (Doctoral program). Betty holds the Masters Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MCSC) from RID. She was the second recipient of the Mary Stotler Award for excellence in Interpreter Education from CIT.

Betty has chaired and served on many national committees on standards and evaluation of interpreters and served as President of the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT). Ms. Colonomos has authored and appeared in video materials on interpreting and she co-authored (with MJ Bienvenu) videos on Deaf Culture, ASL Facial Grammar, and ASL Numbers. She worked as an International Sign interpreter for numerous conferences worldwide. Betty also consults with schools and the legal system as an expert on linguistic and cultural issues impacting the Deaf Community.

Betty is the developer of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI), which is the most widely used model in the U.S. for teaching cognitive processes in interpreting.

She teaches the Foundations of Interpreting Series for hearing, Coda and Deaf interpreters that combines study of the IMI with a Vygotskian approach to learning.

Betty is the creator of the Etna Project (2002 – present) held in New Hampshire and Maryland. The project is a series of retreats supporting a Community of Reflective Practitioners who are interpreters committed to their own growth as they seek to become agents for change in the field of interpreting.
