About This Seminar
What does it mean to have learned something? What are the indicators that learning has occurred? Is presentation of information sufficient to lead learners to application and modification under diverse conditions?
These are questions we, as educators, need to address. The data clearly shows that much of the content in classrooms manifests as abstraction, theory, and principles that are not reflected in interpreters behaviors and thinking.
In this seminar we demonstrate that true learning occurs when students are able to own and integrate these ideas into their lives, their cultures, and their cognitive abilities. There are many effective ways to scaffold students so that they have tools to be able to continue their development as they enter the interpreting field.
Student-centered education promotes self-reflective, curious, and healthier individuals dealing with the many challenges faced by people working with marginalized communities doing a difficult task.
This seminar will help educators design classroom activities that recognize the diverse needs and lenses of the student population.
In order to do this work, we explore our own understanding of interpreting. How does it work? What are interpreters doing? What do they need to be able to do? This personal positioning to the work of interpreting will help guide our exploration of how we support students who are learning how to do this work effectively.
Bring your curricula, lesson plans, and course syllabi and let’s work on increasing learning. Your students will appreciate you!
The structure of the program is as follows:
