Comprehending or Coding: What's the Difference?
The goal for a successful interpretation is that our audience understands the message. In order to achieve that result, the interpreter must also understand. In some instances there are elements of the message that are shared by all interactants except the interpreter, and the interpreter uses the option to intentionally retain the form of the source language. We call this coding. As interpreters, we often find ourselves in situations where we have to make choices between interpreting what is meant, and coding when doing so is appropriate or when we don't understand the meaning. This seminar will look at decisions regarding coding and how we can use it intentionally alongside interpreting for meaning. Through interactive activities we will identify factors that assist us in making appropriate choices.
