About Betty M. Colonomos

Betty M. Colonomos, currently serving as Director of the Bilingual Mediation Center, is a fluent ASL/ English bilingual. Her academic background is in Deaf Education/Speech Pathology (B.S.), Counseling (M.A.) Linguistics (Doctoral program). Betty holds the Masters Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MCSC) from RID. She was the second recipient of the Mary Stotler Award for excellence in Interpreter Education from CIT. Betty has chaired and served on many national committees on standards and evaluation of interpreters and served as President of the Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT). Ms. Colonomos has authored and appeared in video materials on interpreting and she co-authored (with MJ Bienvenu) videos on Deaf Culture, ASL Facial Grammar, and ASL Numbers. She worked as an International Sign interpreter for numerous conferences worldwide.

Betty also consults with schools and the legal system as an expert on linguistic and cultural issues impacting the Deaf Community. Betty is the developer of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI), which is the most widely used model in the U.S. for teaching cognitive processes in interpreting. She teaches the Foundations of Interpreting Series for hearing, coda (Deaf-parented), and Deaf interpreters that combines the IMI with a Vygotskyan approach to learning. Betty is the creator of the Etna Project (2002–present) held in New Hampshire and Maryland. The project is a series of retreats supporting a Community of Reflective Practitioners who are interpreters committed to their own growth as they seek to become change agents in the field of interpreting.

Deaf Co-Teacher Pauline Ballentine

Pauline BallentinePauline Ballentine is a Senior Lecturer of ASL & Interpreting Studies Department at University of Northern Colorado and is currently part time freelancing in Colorado. She used to be a Chair of the Carlstrom ASL-Interpreting Department at North Central University. Pauline holds a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership from Regent University; she is also a certified Deaf Interpreter. Formerly, she used to serve as an interviewer and rater for the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI: ASL) to two states. Pauline is actively with committees and organizations at local and regional levels and presented workshops to Interpreters, K-12 teachers and parents of Deaf children on various topics related to language, literacy with Deaf children and interpreting. Pauline has been involved with Integrated Model of Interpreting since 2012, she is very involved in the dedicated practice of the model.


In her spare time, Ballentine enjoys being the wife to her Deaf husband and mother of three Deaf children; watching sports, especially when her children are playing; reading; and cooking.

Regarding Levels of Participant's Prior Knowledge

RID requires presenters to identify a single level of participants' prior knowledge necessary when attending a workshop, presentation, or seminar from these categories: Little/None, Some, Extensive, Teaching. The reality is that individual participants from all of these levels of prior knowledge have the opportunity to learn together in the Foundations series. Historically, participants have attended the Foundations of Interpreting Seminar Series at all of these Prior Knowledge levels. The series is designed to engage each individual from their own place of learning framed within the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI).
