A Socio-Cultural Approach to Learning: Applications in Work and in Life

Vygotsky Weekend 2023

July 13-16, 2023 in Maryland

We are in the process of rescheduling this seminar.

NOTE: The campus will be an ASL-only environment.

This retreat will be conducted in ASL, without interpretation. If you need to talk (spoken word) with family or others on the phone, we ask that you do so in a way that is respectful of the ASL-only environment we wish to maintain throughout the series. We may establish a 'talking on the phone' space to minimize disruption of our agreed upon language for this retreat. If you think you are unable or unwilling to follow this language agreement, please do not register.

Prerequisite: Foundations Framework A and B.

This retreat relies on participants having the 'framework' of how we look at interpreting, the cognitive processes, and how we talk about it. Please register only if you've taken Foundations Framework A and B (formerly Foundations I and II) in the last few years or have permission of the facilitator.

A Socio-Cultural Approach to Learning: Applications in Work and in Life

Vygotsky offers us a socio-cultural framework for how we show up in the world, in our relationships, and in our work. In this twenty hour immersion experience, we will explore such topics as: a) how to demonstrate cognitive development in ways that speak to traditional, academic systems, b) how to justify the need for learner-centered education/training in a teacher-centered structures, c) what are the reasons for resistance to this type of learning and how can we contribute to greater clarity.

These explorations will help those of us who are interpreters, mentors, and educators as we collaborate with colleagues and students: in maximizing our potential as we prepare for work assignments; in supporting others to explore and understand their own work; and in bringing creativity and clarity to challenges that we and our colleagues encounter.

This gathering is for those who want to be challenged and enlightened. We will scaffold and support each other as we unpack ideas, strategies, and blocks that will contribute to our journey towards greater freedom and understanding.

Prerequisite: Foundations Framework A and B (formerly Foundations 1 and 2)
