FromĀ In the Spirit of Bilingualism: I believe that ASL as a natural language and the language of Deaf people can become an equal partner of English. I believe that, at Gallaudet, ASL and English are interdependent. I believe that both ASL and English can be used appropriately in teaching, in the interaction between perception and understanding, in making meanings through any kind of experience or intuition, in an attempt to cause changes, and in creating or intervening in reality. I believe that both learning and teaching are ego-threatening tasks and that we need to be courageous in teaching in both ASL and English even if we are vulnerable and there are no guarantees of success
