The concept of ally, again, has to do with acknowledging that the oppressed group has a right to the dignity of its own leadership, of listening to them when they say, “We know what we need to have done.” And it has to do with working within your own oppressor community to do what needs to be done in order to equalize the balance of power.

I hope some of these ideas will make you think. It does not mean you like it. We don’t like racism, we don’t like sexism, we don’t like ageism or classism or any of the other ‘isms’ that plague our society, but we need to know the stuff is there. And we need to know that it’s in us, too.
