About the Seminar Modules
Foundations of Interpreting Processes - Framework: Part A (Formerly Foundations I)
This seminar will focus on components of the Integrated Model of Interpreting in a low stress, highly interactive environment. Participants will learn how to convey equivalent messages by working through graduated texts and activities. By working on skills in small-group formats (pairs or triads), participants will develop tools for understanding and improving their own internal processes. Participants will also develop the language necessary to discuss the interpreting task with each other and integrate strategies for continuing their own improvement. Practice materials will be interpreted from ASL into English. This seminar is designed for student and working interpreters with receptive conversational ASL skills. All practice is done in this consecutive mode. Comfortable clothing is encouraged. In order to facilitate learning for everyone, no one will be permitted to join the seminar after the first hour has passed.
Prerequisites for Foundations: Framework, Part A: There are no prerequisites for this seminar.
Foundations of Interpreting Processes - Framework: Part B (Formerly Foundations II)
This training is a continuation of Framework: Part A. It will focus on components of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI) in a low stress, highly interactive environment. Participants will learn how to convey equivalent messages by working through graduated texts and activities. By working on skills in small-group formats (pairs or triads), participants will develop tools for understanding and improving their own internal processes. Participants will further develop the language necessary to discuss the interpreting task with each other and integrate strategies for continuing their own improvement. This session applies the tools and models to spoken English materials interpreted into ASL. All practice is done in consecutive mode. Comfortable clothing is encouraged. In order to facilitate learning for everyone, no one will be permitted to join the seminar after the first hour has passed.
Prerequisites for Foundations: Framework, Part B: Participants must have completed Foundations: Framework, Part A, to be able to participate in this session.
Foundations of Interpreting Processes - Tools: Part A (Formerly Foundations III)
This third module of the Foundations of Interpreting Series continues the development of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI) as a tool for analysis of interpreting processes. We will work in small-group formats (pairs or triads), to enhance learning and foster peer support. Large group discussions allow us to share learning with other groups. Consecutive interpretation will continue as the mode; however, we will reduce processing time using structured activities. In this module all practice texts will be presented in ASL interpreted into spoken English.
Prerequisites for Foundations: Tools, Part A: Participants must have completed Foundations: Framework, Parts A and B, in order to participate in this session.
Foundations of Interpreting Processes - Tools: Part B (Formerly Foundations IV)
This fourth module of the Foundations of Interpreting Series continues the development of the Integrated Model of Interpreting (IMI) as a tool for analysis of interpreting processes. We will work in small-group formats (pairs or triads), to enhance learning and foster peer support. Large group discussions allow us to share learning with other groups. Consecutive interpretation will continue as the mode; however, we will reduce processing time in structured activities. In this module all practice texts will be presented in spoken English interpreted into ASL.
Prerequisites for Foundations: Tools, Part B: Participants must have completed Foundations: Tools, Part A, in order to participate in this session.
Foundations of Interpreting Processes - Managing (Formerly Foundations V/VI)
Prerequisites for Foundations: Managing: Participants must have completed Foundations: Tools, Parts A and B, in order to participate in this session.
Foundations of Interpreting Processes - Integrating (Formerly Foundations VII/VIII)
This final extended module of the Foundations of Interpreting Processes series focuses on simultaneous interpreting. Activities, as well as tools for analyzing depth of processing, prediction, and message equivalence will be offered. During practice sessions, participants will work simultaneously between ASL and English. Participants will prepare plans for post-foundations development.
Prerequisites for Foundations: Integrating: Participants must have completed Foundations: Managing in order to participate in this session.

About the Seminar Modules for Deaf Interpreters
Foundations of Interpreting Processes - Framework, Parts A and B
Being a skilled signer is just a part of what it takes to be a competent interpreter, as many Deaf people realize when they take this training. The seminar will focus on the Integrated Model of Interpreting in a low stress, highly interactive environment. Participants will learn how to use various mental processes to produce an equivalent message by working through graduated texts and activities. Working on skills in small-group formats, participants will develop tools for understanding and improving their own internal processes. Participants will also develop language necessary to discuss interpreting work with both Deaf and hearing interpreters. We will also discuss strategies for continuing improvement.
The curriculum and materials for this training have been adapted to the requirements and needs of CDIs or Deaf people interested in becoming CDIs. The basic content is the same as Foundations: Framework, Parts A and B for hearing/Coda interpreters.
Prerequisites for Foundations: Framework, Part A for Deaf Interpreters: There are no prerequisites for this seminar.
