Mastery in Mentoring: Lifelong Learning

The 2018 edition of RID's VIEWS includes this submission in ASL, featuring Kelly Decker and Betty Colonomos.

Kelly Decker and Betty Colonomos from VIEWS article

Based on the works of L.S. Vygotsky and others who have applied his theories to education, our approach is informed by these principles:

  • learning is fostered by participation in activities designed to nurture reflective practice
  • insights are revealed through dialogue and inquiry
  • collaboration with peers and mentors in a safe environment facilitates this process
  • the locus of control in the hands of the learner promotes self-discovery
  • cognition, emotion, and culture are interrelated and significantly impact learning

Our goal is to bring this model to interpreting communities that wish to discuss their work and value growth, that respect each learner’s zone of development, and that seek to provide the highest quality services to consumers. To this end, we offer a variety of holistic training approaches and formats that recognize and honor the diversity of our communities.

"Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn"

- Benjamin Franklin
